Written characters are fun to draw, probably because I get to make them up. I mean, the author provides the base for the character. Usually it’s something along the lines of hair color, body type, and a few other details. This leaves me to fill in all the gaps, using the base and the character’s actions and personality as a model. Of course the results may not be exactly how the author envisioned their character, but it’s my interpretation of their words.

Sometimes I have trouble imagining when a character looks like, either because I have too little, or too much information. More than once I’ve come across a character that was only a name. It’s hard to build a structure off of a name. There are also characters where I get quite a few paragraphs of detail about their exact appearance, right down to their clothing. With these… I get bored and usually skip over the extra details.

It just makes me wonder about how to properly describe my characters without interfering with the reader’s imaginative process. Hm… further research pending.
